Rajkumar Hirani was born to father Suresh Hirani on 20 November 1962, who ran a typing institute in Nagpur. Rajkumar studied in St. Francis De'Sales High School, Nagpur, and did his graduation in commerce. Though his parents always aspired him to become a chartered accountant, but his flaws were on theatre. In his college days Hirani wanted to be an actor in bollywood industry and soon involved himself with Hindi theatre.
Raju tried his luck in acting but failed hence he opted for the editing course. Soon he earned a scholarship, thereby reducing the load on his father's shoulders.
His failed attempts in movie industry forced him to shift to advertising industry and soon enough he established himself as a director and producer of advertising films.
He was also seen in a Fevicol ad where some men and elephants were trying to pull and break a Fevicol plank, saying "Jor laga ke Haisha". Later he again shifted to the bollywood industry and worked on promos and trailers for 1942: A Love Story. He edited promotions for Kareeb. He got his first big opportunity as a film editor with Mission Kashmir.
