Yami Gautam was born in a Himachali family in Bilaspur to Mukesh Gautam, a Punjabi film director and Anjali Gautam. She made her film debut in the Kannada film Ullasa Utsaha. The film failed at the box office but Yami received positive reviews for her performance. Sometime later she made her Bollywood debut with Vicky Donor, in which she starred opposite Ayushmann Khurrana.
She acted the role of the Bengali girl Ashima Roy, a girl who falls in love with a Punjabi boy who is a sperm donor.
She received IIFA award for The Star Debut of the Year Award and Zee Cine for The Best Female Debut Award for Vicky Donor. She has acted in Total Siyappa and Action Jackson with Ajay Devagan and, Badlapur in 2015 against Varun Dhawan. All these movies performed well at the box office. She has also acted in Telugu Movie Courier Boy Kalyan and Tamil movie Tamilselvanum Thaniyar Anjalum.
